Opportunities for Healthcare Research Using Synthetic Data

Workshop presented at the 3rd Annual DS-I Africa Scientific Meeting in Kigali. Objectives included discussing DS-I Africa training programs (U2R and UE5 funded), introducing synthetic data for health research, and exploring additional training opportunities in Rwanda.

The workshop featured expert speakers from WUSTL, including members of the DST-HIRWA program leadership, and brought together over 120 researchers from across the DS-I Africa network. Live demonstrations of MDClone capabilities generated significant interest from prospective collaborators.

Key Outcomes
  • Understanding of research opportunities with synthetic data in African settings
  • Raised awareness of data privacy benefits in healthcare research
  • Live demonstration of MDClone platform capabilities to 120+ researchers
  • Network building across DS-I Africa consortium programs
  • Identification of potential collaborators for future SYNAPSE cohorts

MDClone ADAMS Platform Training & Hackathon

Intensive training for faculty (n=6) and first trainee cohort (n=8) on MDClone ADAMS Platform. The hackathon training was conducted alongside DS-I Africa 3rd annual networking meeting in Kigali.

Trainees worked in teams with faculty mentors, supported by real-time feedback from MDClone experts at WUSTL. The First Trainee Cohort completed Small Research Project (SRP) grant preparation during the hackathon sessions.

Key Outcomes
  • 6 faculty and 8 trainees trained on MDClone ADAMS platform
  • Intensive hackathon experience with synthetic healthcare data
  • SRP grant proposals developed and completed by trainee cohort
  • Submissions prepared and reviewed for UR institutional approval
  • Mentorship relationships established between trainees and faculty
Methodology

Our Training Philosophy

A structured, evidence-based approach to building sustainable data science capacity

Progressive Learning

Training progresses from foundational concepts through advanced applications — ensuring participants build confidence at each stage before moving forward.

Peer Mentoring

Each trainee is paired with a faculty mentor and an expert MDClone ADAMS user from WUSTL — creating a multi-layered support system for research development.

Publication-Ready Output

Training culminates in real research output — SRP grants and scientific manuscripts prepared for peer-reviewed publication, building academic track records.

Collaboration Network

Our Partner Institutions

SYNAPSE is powered by a network of leading institutions across the U.S. and Africa.
